Dr. Gina Stewart delivers inspirational sermon at National Baptist Joint Board Session

Lott Carey President Dr. Gina Stewart preached a stirring sermon at the National Baptist Joint Board Session on Tuesday, January 23, at the Renasant Convention Center in Memphis.

Dr. Stewart challenged her listeners to stand up for Jesus, even when it’s difficult or unpopular. She inspired them to speak up for Jesus in their churches, in their boardrooms, and when they are oppressed or hated. Speaking up for Jesus in the face of injustice, oppression, and falsehood. She reminded them of Claudia, Pilate’s wife who, though nameless in the Matthew 27 text, was the one who spoke up for Jesus.

The Lott Carey leader drew parallels between the historical context of Jesus’ crucifixion and the contemporary issues of our time, such as propaganda, misinformation, and political pragmatism. She challenged the listeners to be like Claudia, who had the courage and the conviction to stand up for Jesus, even when it was inconvenient, unpopular, and uncommon.

Dr. Stewart called on her listeners to be unapologetic, unashamed, and confident in their faith. She exhorted them to stand for justice and to live out their faith in their daily lives. They can have confidence and hope, because Jesus loves them and saved them.

Senior pastor of Christ Missionary Baptist Church in Memphis, Dr. Stewart is the first woman elected president of Lott Carey, and the only woman to be president of a historically black Baptist national organization or convention.

The session brought together members of the four major Black Baptist conventions in the US: the National Baptist Convention USA, the National Baptist Convention of America, the Progressive National Baptist Convention, and the National Missionary Baptist Convention of America.

Theme of the joint session, held January 22-25, 2024, is “Gathering At the River…Again” and features musical concerts, workshops, and worship services.
