MEN ON MISSIONS

ABOUT MEN ON MISSIONS

Lott Carey Men on Missions mobilize men to engage in missions around the world. We work to:

  • Advance the Lott Carey global missional impact
  • Execute short-term missions assignments
  • Support special missions projects
  • Recruit others for membership in Lott Carey

Lott Carey Men on Missions are giving leadership for our Disaster Preparation and Response Initiative and our Housing for Haiti Response. At the end of 2013, we had deployed more than 100 men to help build 13 new homes for families displaced by the 2010 earthquake.

Guest Speaker

Vernon Hammett: A native Washingtonian and an ordained Deacon at the historic Alfred Street Baptist Church in Alexandria, Virginia, where the Rev. Dr. Howard John Wesley serves as the senior pastor. His heart for missions was ignited during his inaugural visit to Haiti in 2012, where he participated in building homes and rebuilding the lives of Haitians displaced by the devastating January 2010 earthquake. It was during this journey that God revealed God’s calling on Vernon’s life to serve as a missionary.

Since then, Vernon has returned to Haiti for numerous short and long-term mission assignments. Since 2015, he has served at the Mission of Grace, joyously traveling along goat trails and mountain passages as he ministers the gospel of Jesus Christ. His love extends to cradling little babies, tutoring school-aged children, and sharing God’s love with everyone he encounters. Vernon has raised funds, organized donation drives, trained missionaries, and led mission teams—all for the benefit of God’s chosen people in Haiti. He has also served as a mission leader in Puerto Rico, providing assistance in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, and in Flint, helping the region recover from drinking water contamination. As a vocalist, he has participated in music-oriented missions to both South Korea and Italy.

Since October 2020, Mr. Hammett has spent more than 65 weeks in his beloved Haiti. His passion for ministering to God’s people in Haiti led him to establish the non-profit organization JJS Missions. In response to the 2021 earthquake in Haiti, JJS Missions collaborated with several local churches to spearhead a donation drive. The result was the distribution of nearly 100 fifty-five-gallon drums of donated items to the devastated areas in Haiti. Additionally, this conglomerate packaged and shipped an additional 180 drums to Haiti and sent an equivalent amount of donations to Liberia over the past two years.

Mr. Hammett retired from the federal government in 2011 after 36 years of service. Most of his career was spent with the U.S. House of Representatives, where he held a senior management position on the Appropriations Committee staff. He has been happily married to his wife Judith since 1982, and they are proud parents of two boys, Terrence and Timothy. Their loving grandsons—Tyrique, Quentin, Jaden, and Mateo—bring them immense joy, and they eagerly look forward to spoiling them at every opportunity.

Vernon is a servant leader, engaging and inspiring others to serve. His genuine love for the Lord and passion for missionary service are contagious. He wholeheartedly embodies the command of our Savior to go and make disciples of men.

“Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness.”
