A Message Concerning Haiti

Lott Carey Supplies Emergency Aid to Haiti

Lott Carey Supplies Emergency Aid to Haiti

The Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Mission Society has pledged an initial sum of US$50,000 in earthquake relief for Haiti.

This was announced by Executive Secretary-Treasurer Emmett Dunn in response to the devastating 7.2 earth tremor that struck the Caribbean nation on the morning of August 14.

As at the time of writing, more than 1,400 persons were confirmed dead and more than 7,000 injured.

“Lott Carey stands with our sisters and brothers in Haiti as they dig out of yet another horrific disaster,” said Rev. Dunn.

“Hearing the stories from our partners on the ground awakens unpleasant memories of the earthquake of 2010, which some have still not fully recovered. We want to assure the Haitian people of Lott Carey’s prayers and financial support.”

Aid from the global mission agency is already helping those in need. Ms. Lynn Joseph, founder of Mission of Grace orphanage, said a container of food sent by Lott Carey that cleared customs just days before the quake, is providing welcome relief to affected families at a village in Carries. “We are praising the Lord for that,” she said.

But while the orphanage escaped serious damage, a home for the elderly collapsed. Ms. Joseph reported extensive damage to houses and other structures.

“Right now, we are needing prayers and financial support to start buying food and supplies to help the people.  Most of the village is sleeping outside because their houses have been destroyed.”

Dr. Joel Dorsinville of the Haiti Baptist Convention, a Lott Carey global partner, said “The Southwestern region of the country is critically affected by the destruction of homes and lives.”

He appealed for “solidarity in prayer and humanitarian assistance to the families, churches, and communities affected by the disaster.”

The US$50,000 will address the immediate need for food, water, and medical supplies. But Rev. Dunn asserted that “A more robust response will be necessary after a full assessment of the damage.”
African and American diplomats, officials, and entrepreneurs were present, and several of them included the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Kamla Persad-Bissessar and the Secretary General of the Common Market for Southern and Eastern Africa, Sindoso Ngwenya, the Secretary General of the OAS, Jose Miguel Insulza; and the Assistant Secretary General of the OAS, Albert Ramdin.
Another potential disaster lies at Haiti’s doorstep. It is in the path of a tropical system that is expected to bring heavy rain, with fears of flooding, and strong winds that can cause severer damage to weakened buildings and structures.

Rev. Dunn calls on “all our churches and friends of Lott Carey to help us respond in a significant way. It is our prayer that God will comfort the bereaved, encourage the broken hearted, and restore health and healing to the nation and people of Haiti.”

She has brought with her a wealth of experience. She is founder of Greater Works, a nonprofit devoted to philanthropy and ministry development

Dr. Stewart is a former member of the Advisory Board for The African American Pulpit, The National Civil Rights Museum and Bread for the World.

A sought-after speaker, she has preached at notable events such as the Hampton University Minister’s Conference in Virginia and was inducted into the Martin Luther King Board of Preachers, Class of 2018.

The Tennessee native has been recognized with several prestigious awards. The long list of honors includes being the first female to receive the Carter G. Woodson Award from Southwest Community College in February 2013, the Living Legends Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the community, and the Pastor of the Year award from Citizens for Better Service.

Dr. Stewart’s association with Lott Carey goes back two decades. She gave distinguished service as a Team Leader for the Pastoral Excellence Network, one of Lott Carey’s longstanding programs, and previously served the mission agency as Second Vice President and First Vice President.

She succeeds Rev. Gregory Jackson of Hackensack, New Jersey, who was president from 2018-2021.

“I believe God is pleased with this. With Dr. Stewart and her election and selection to be president,” Rev. Jackson said. “She has been working in Lott Carey for several years. She’s been second vice president, first vice president, and now president. She was part of the Pastoral Excellence program. She has journeyed around the world and has ministered with people. She is ready.”

“Dr. Stewart’s ascendency to the presidency of Lott Carey is not only historic but also providential,” said Lott Carey Executive Secretary-Treasurer Rev. Emmett Dunn. “I celebrate this moment and welcome Dr. Stewart as a co-laborer for the Kingdom and look forward to working with her executive team of leaders to advance the ministry and mission of Lott Carey.”

She is author of We’ve Got Next: HERstory in HIStory. Her work has been featured in other publications such as Faith: Christian Leaders Reflect on the Election of Barack Obama, What We Love About the Black Church: Can We Get A Witness? and Black Practical Theology.

The new president heads a body with long term mission engagements in more than 20 countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, North America, Oceania, and South America.

“Dr. Stewart stands tall not as a female leader but as a leader. Her notoriety transcends Baptist boundaries, which is an asset to the Lott Carey network,” said Rev. Dunn.

“I believe Lott Carey will expand its national and international footprint because of the visionary and prophetic giftedness she brings to our missional community. Above all, this historic moment crystalizes that indeed, ‘at Lott Carey everybody is somebody.’”

“What a joy it is to affirm the election of Rev. Dr. Gina Stewart as the next national President of Lott Carey and the first female president in its great history,” declared Dr. John M. Alexander, Jr., Chair of the Lott Carey Board of Directors.

“Dr. Stewart was faithful to Lott Carey prior to being elected to leadership in the convention.  I watched her faithfulness as Second Vice President, and I was uplifted and encouraged observing her progressive and unwavering support as First Vice President.  I am convinced that under Dr. Stewart’s dynamic leadership, she will lift Lott Carey to higher heights in missions locally, nationally, and globally.”

Rev. Gregory Jackson of Hackensack, New Jersey, completes three years as president of the Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Mission Society. This follows on previous stints as first vice president and second vice president of the international mission agency.

Recently retired after 36 years as senior pastor of Mount Olive Baptist Church in Hackensack, Rev. Jackson has had a stellar vocation as pastor, mentor, denominational leader, encourager, and guide.

His reach has been both local and global. His influence encompassing the pastoral, missional, educational, and ecumenical spheres.

While president of Lott Carey, Rev. Jackson oversaw the transition of leadership of the global mission agency. Rev. Emmett Dunn succeeded Dr. David Goatley as executive secretary-treasurer after Dr. Goatley accepted a professorship at Duke Divinity School in North Carolina.

Rev. Jackson was instrumental in working with Rev. Dunn in guiding Lott Carey through the difficult Covid-19 pandemic outbreak, ensuring it remains true to its mission while being frugal in fulfilling its financial and other obligations.

“Rev. Jackson’s tenure as President, was impacted by the pandemic. Driven by his passion for missions and his compassion for God’s people, he advanced the ministry and mission of Lott Carey with zeal, commitment, and humility,” said Rev. Dunn.

“I am forever grateful to him for his leadership, guidance, and support. Rev. Jackson is a shining example of a servant leader.  My entrance into Lott Carey was made a lot easier because of the prayers and support of President Gregory Jackson.”

Rev. Jackson is being succeeded by Dr. Gina Stewart, the first woman elected Lott Carey president, and the first female president of a national African American Baptist mission agency or convention. Dr. Stewart is senior pastor of Christ Missionary Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee.
